Innovation

Advances in technology have always been the prime force behind the evolution of society. We understand that today's businesses seek the advantages of the creation and adoption of innovative practices as a key differentiator amongst their competition.

For this reason Petals Link's first core value is that of innovation. Petals Link remains constantly aware of technological advances via participation in and contribution to research initiatives across the entire enterprise architecture ecosystem.

This experience brings great insight into the trends and opportunities available to the enterprise and fuels the development of Petals Link services and solutions.

As much as half of the strategic investment by Petals Link is focused on research and development of open source, innovative, professional solutions for enterprise, academia and industry.

Open source

We are absolutely convinced that an open source licensing model benefits everyone: developers, integrators, users.

Open source practices allow us to develop synergies with our user and contributor communities that accelerate our innovations much faster than traditional proprietary software business models. We choose, through open source, to foster innovation at a level we could never dream of achieving alone.

This is why Petals solutions are licensed under the GNU Lesser General Purpose Licence (LGPL), to ensure the code remains open.

In addition to this, we are active participants in the open source community through our membership of the OW2 consortium and a strong, collaborative relationship with the academic community. We encourage co-operation and collaboration, through open systems, for the benefit of business and the enterprise.

Openness and standards

It is now well-known that proprietary, closed source technologies create vendor lock-in and force an exclusive relationship between client and software supplier.

For us, in order to build a sustainable and collaborative relationship, we believe relationships should be based on confidence and mutual respect. Furthermore, we respect and encourage freedom of choice in our relationship with our clients.

We promote the adoption of open standards in order that our clients can avoid vendor lock-in and gain maximum compatibility with both their legacy solutions and other third-party technologies. Notably, Petals Link is the first software provider to gain Java Business Integration (JBI) certification for our implementation of an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), PEtALS.

We also support the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) open framework as part of our open source implementation of ESB technology. Petals Link has an active relationship with the standards organisations, working closely to support and evolve their work in this area.

European Open Source Software

For several years the software industry has been lead by North American companies. The “Opensource” licensing model presents a formidable opportunity for the European software industry to compete head-to-head on quality, capability and value with its North American counterparts.

Besides the economic benefits from the adoption of open source software, this approach fosters collaboration amongst many innovative software companies based in Europe. Thus, a consequence of our values is that we are establishing a stronger and more competitive software industry that is bringing strategic and economic benefits to the European community as well as re-enforcing socio-cultural ties between organisations across the entire European community.
